Accomplishments

Establishment of a Downtown Historic District – SMART worked hard to establish a Downtown Historic District.  Special ordinances were passed to help protect the historic character of downtown.  These ordinances will also help guide remodel’s and new constructions, as well as prevent demolition of historically significant structures.

Formation of a Design Review Board – This 5-member board is tasked with reviewing permits for renovation or new construction within the Downtown Historic District. 

Grant Acquistions – SMART has fully completed or assisted in the acquistion of the following grantsto date:

• Tri-County Round-Up Grant in the amount of $5,000.
• SCDOT TEA Grant in the amount of $200, 000.
• Edisto/Savannah RC&D Grant in the amount of $7,500.
• Palmetto Pride Grant in the amount of $4,000.

Town Clean-Up’s – SMART is a member of the Adopt-A-Highway program.  As such, it performs clean-up’s downtown on a regular basis.  These are always open to public participation.
